We were pleased to share the stage at a recent engagement of ours with a brass ensemble who had come all the way from a little town called Modling about 20km south of Vienna in Austria. The group ‘Blaserensemble’ comprised of a selection of members from the larger ‘Schulerheim-Orchester’ made up of students from the high school that enjoy playing music in their spare time. Those that joined us on this trip were Rene Emminger (trumpet), Josef Hofer (trumpet), Albert Rossmann (trumpet), Mario Emminger (trombone), Norbert Kunst (trombone), Jutta Goszl (trombone), Karl Wagner (trombone and group leader) and Florian Mitsch (tuba).
Unfortunately the group were not able to bring better weather over from Austria for us and so shortly after beginning their programme they were forced to move inside. A space on the landing inside was cleared and so the music was allowed to descend onto those listening around the house. The group treated us to lovely music, some familiar to us like ‘The Pink Panther’ and other music that we did not know.

It is great to see that brass music is so popular across Europe and that even though we might only be able to say a few words to each other due to language difficulties we can still get great enjoyment from listening to each other perform.

The group managed to fit a lot into the short 4 day trip and even managed time to experience a traffic jam in London. They made visits to Canterbury and Stratford-upon-Avon where they performed in the Holy Trinity Church, Shakespeare’s burial place. Finally, the group made it to Bloxham to play alongside HNBB before heading back shortly afterwards.

The leader of the group Karl Wagner was able to set up the tour having sung with the director of music for the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford, Andrew Jones. They had both sung together in a choir called ‘Capella Albertina Wien’ based at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna.
